Why does he say "she" in Human Nature?

Why do you think Michael said "Why does SHE do me that way?" on one of the refrains in Human Nature? This isn't in the original version and it really stood out to me. It could be he just misspoke, but Michael rarely did that. He knew his lyrics.

I think it might be just a little twist... Playing with the lyrics, maybe?! 'Cause he better not be speaking about no woman!!!

Don't know, maybe for the same reason he says in Who is it, It Is a Friend of Mine, Is it My Brother?

I always wondered why he said It Is a Friend of Mine, not Is It a Friend of MIne.   No idea, but Michael was always playing with our heads, wasn't he?

Here is what I know about this song with a bit of analysis thrown in:

This song (music by Steve Porcaro and lyrics by John Bettis) has a beautiful melody and is perfectly suited to Michael's extraordinary voice. (I get goose bumps every time I hear it.) This is probably why it is a song that is almost exclusively identified with him even though other artists have covered it or adapted it in many ways. It is one of my top favorites. Porcaro reportedly had written it for his daughter, but was it remained unfinished at the time the melody went to Michael and Quincy Jones for consideration for the Thriller album. Bettiis was later brought in to supply the lyrics. I have never found any comments from Bettis about the song's lyrics. The lyrics are not what I would have expected for Michael. Perhaps he chose to do the song because if its beauty, and perhaps the story it tells is one with which he was familiar--and not necessarilythat it reflected personal conduct.  This is a fantastic song and the composers were smart to give it to Michael. No one has ever done it better.

Here is a very basic analysis of the lyrics. The song voices the feelings of two people in a relationship. One person is probably unfaithful to the partner (the second voice) who does not understand why this has happened. The first voice is for the person that wants to get out and explore the pleasures of the night in a city that never sleeps and has electric eyes--probably New York, since it as a town that is "just an apple". The phrases, "sweet seducing sighs, "take a bite", " touch a stranger" and the girl who knows she is being watched and "likes the way I stare" all suggest that the first persona of the song seeks sensual pleasures in exploring what the city has to offer.

The second voice is of the person who is left behind while the lover goes on these excursions into the night life. The second person is questioned by friends about the relationship and the behavior of the first person/lover. The first person instructs the second person, if your friends, relatives etc., ask you "Why?" you need to tell them that what I do "is human nature" and besides that, "I like living this way. I like loving this way." The second person, suffering from the behavior of the lover, asks herself, "Why, why does he do me that way?"

I have noticed that in TII, Michael is not always 100% consistent in using the pronouns he/she of the written lyrics.  I am sure he realized that this  situation can occur in a relationship, regardless of the gender of the individuals involved.

If you watch other rehearsals (was it Dangerous Rehearsals that was on youtube?) he played with the lyrics quite a bit in rehearsal.  I think, in TII the IJCSLY lyrics were also off.

Well, they had quite a few mistakes in IJCSLY in TII.  It must have been one of the first times they rehearsed it together.  Still, it is one of my favorite parts of the movie along with the Human Nature segment.  The clarity of his voice coupled with the haziness and radiance of the colored spotlights with his poses just give me chills.  He sounds otherworldly.

If I remember correctly, he has messed up or shifted lines around in Human Nature in concert before... Don't remember which one it was...

Now that I've thought about it more Suz, maybe he was thinking about LMP and how she stabbed him in the back at that moment when he said "why does SHE do me that way?."  What do you think?  Don't  you just LOVE this picture of the two of them together?  It's one of my favorites.  BJ, it's all for you hun, all for you!  LOL!Fat Lisa LOL!

Pj, you know, you're right, this is about HER, it's always about HER, isn't it?

Love this pic, too, he looks smug, she looks pissed.  Love it when she looks pissed.  Love his hair, btw, loved that look on him.  Now I wanna see that picture Bj was talking about with her crying and that clown face mother of her rolling her eyes (well, that's all she can move on her face, anyway, right?)

I don't know why, but my intuition always told me that Mrs. Presley was none to pleased with that union and played a hand in the break up.
